The fastest confirmed route is 1× Sage Seeds → 1× Oblivion Essence in the Paradox Crucible, 8.7 seconds. The Cauldron also converts 1× Plank → 1× Oblivion Essence (that conversion is the official “Tenacity” achievement, 1.7% of players). Buy or farm Sage Seeds when you need volume; use the Plank route when you already have a plank surplus.

The essence pair is reversible, and both directions are tracked by achievements — “Vitae & Mors” (1.9%) wants Vitality → Oblivion, “Tenacity” (1.7%) wants Plank → Oblivion. If you are hunting either one, do it in the Cauldron; the Paradox Crucible does not credit them.
The best way to make it (cost, not speed)
Sage Seeds are bought for 360 copper and convert one-for-one. That makes the seed route a straight copper-to-essence converter with an 8.7 s cycle: whatever Oblivion Essence sells or unlocks for, your floor cost is 360.
The Plank route is free only if planks are already a surplus. Planks come out of the wood line in bulk, and a stockpiled plank chest is the cheapest essence source in the game — at the cost of Cauldron time you could spend on gem recipes.
